The X-PERT Programme is a structured patient education programme for people with type 2 diabetes that meets the key criteria identified by the Department of Health and Diabetes UK. Now that the tools are in place to provide patients with learning resources, National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidance on patient education has now been reinstated. From January 2006, all Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) need to implement NICE recommendations by providing all people with diabetes with high quality, structured education. The move towards greater self-management proposed in the Diabetes National Service Framework (NSF) requires health professionals to work interprofessionally with people with diabetes in ways to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to self-manage their condition. The aim of the train the trainer course is for health professionals to deliver structured patient education programmes to achieve these outcomes. The X-PERT Train the Trainers course is a two-day course incorporating a mixture of theoretical sessions on adult education, empowerment, patient-centred care and clinical guidelines with hands-on interactive sessions on delivering the X-PERT Programme, audit and quality assurance programmes. The price is £550 and includes: the two-day course; one night bed & breakfast; evening meal; lunch and refreshments on both days; tutors manual (normal cost of manual £300); completion certificate.
